As technology continues to evolve, there are increasingly blurred lines about the various subfields of engineering having to do with electricity, computers, computer software and several other engineering fields. Computer engineering has many of the same classification difficulties as software engineering and other technologically modern subfields of engineering.

To further complicate matters, there are differing schools of thought about classification and terminology whether you’re talking to computer engineers, corporate and other business managers who interview and hire computer engineers, or professionals of more traditional types of engineering. It seems like everyone has an opinion about the designation and classification of this area of engineering.

Computer engineering is a specialty discipline that combines the academic areas of both computer science and electrical engineering. Sometimes computer engineering is referred to as ‘electronic and computer engineering’.

Typically, computer engineers start out as electrical engineers and then go on to receive additional training in software-hardware integration and / or software design. Computer engineers are often involved in many aspects of computers and computer design.

From design of individual computer systems to the designing of supercomputers, microprocessors and personal computers, as well as circuit design and a number of other systems involving electrical engineering and the design of motor modules as well, computer engineers are a mixed lot of professionals with an assorted lot of skills and expertise.

Some other computer engineering projects include things like working with analog sensors, writing embedded software for microcontrollers, designing mixed signal circuit boards, designing VLSI chips, as well as the design of operating systems. Many computer engineers are also suited for robotics research positions as well.

As an academic discipline many accredited universities as well as technical schools are offering degrees in computer engineering. These programs typically involve both analog and digital circuit design in their curriculum, as well as electronic engineering in addition to so-labeled computer engineering classes.
