It is very annoying when people said that it is easy to become Structural Engineer, as if it an easy job. But who could blame them? Nowadays, due to the rapid development and constant upgrading of computer hardware and structural engineering software, many structural engineers have become too reliant on computers as a tool in number crunching in their daily design work.

These easily accessible facilities may have caused the users, especially young structural engineers, to lack comprehension of the overall design aspect. Furthermore, there is the danger that full dependence on computer-generated design results for reinforced concrete structures, may erode the understanding and the ability to have a ‘feel’ of how reinforced concrete structures tend to react under various types of load conditions.

It is true by using a structural engineering software can really expedite the design work and produce construction drawings to the contractors. However, the drawback to this is it will make the young structural engineer have a little knowledge on what he or she is really doing. For an experience structural engineer to use engineering software is excusable and acceptable since they already have the experience and understanding on the concept of design works.

It is advisable for young structural engineer to do some manual calculation checking on the output from engineering software. By doing this, at least they will have a better understanding on the conceptual design. Furthermore, if this young structural engineer really want to become a versatile engineer, they have to work hard to achieve it so everybody will give some respect to this professional engineering field.
